Tips For Coping With Hair Loss During Chemo

Blog

If you are going through chemotherapy, you probably want everyone to treat you as normally as possible. This will allow you to continue about your day and not be reminded that you are sick all the time. One obstacle for people treating you normally or for you to feel normal is hair loss. You might feel distressed whenever you look in the mirror when you have lost your hair because it reminds you that you are battling a life-threatening illness and because you might miss your hair. Here are some tips for coping with hair loss while going through radiation treatment for cancer.

1. Get a Wig Fitted Ahead of Time

One option is to get a wig fitted before you even start chemotherapy. This will allow you to get a wig that matches the color of your hair and then get it cut into the style that you usually have it cut in. Then, when you start losing your hair, you can easily transition to the wig before anyone notices. Be sure that you buy a high quality wig that is made out of human hair in order to decrease the chances that it will tangle easily, and have a wig specialist teach you how to take care of it so that it lasts throughout your entire chemotherapy treatment.

2. Try a Cold Cap Treatment

Another option is for you to try a cold cap treatment. Cold cap treatments essentially freeze your hair follicles while you are undergoing radiation and hold your hair tightly to your head. This can decrease the amount of damage that the radiation does to the hair follicles, thereby reducing the amount of hair that you lose substantially. This can be a more expensive option, but if you can afford it, you will allow yourself to get through chemotherapy without any sort of self-esteem issues as a result of your appearance.

3. Talk to a Dermatologist

If you do lose your hair, be sure that you talk to a dermatologist about what you can do to keep your scalp as healthy as possible. You might feel a little bit more comfortable rocking a bald head if you make sure that it is smooth and not flaky or red. This will allow you to feel more confident about your appearance without having to take all those steps to hide the fact that you are going through cancer.

Improving The Smell Of My Hair

I have always been a naturally sweaty person, which kind of got in the way when I really started dating. I realized I was going to be left trying to smell my best around the people around me, which really made me nervous. However, a friend of mine told me about a great kind of shampoo that was meant to help people who were struggling with bad odors. The shampoo really improved the smell of my hair, and when I used it every day, it eliminated the issue altogether. This blog is all about improving your hair and skin care by changing up your products.
