How To Ensure Your Hair Color Covers Grays

Blog

When those gray hairs start appearing in your scalp, your first instinct may be to start coloring and covering them. But not all hair dye covers grays effectively. How do you make sure your hair color camouflages those light-colored hairs? Start by following those tips.

1. Use a semi-permanent color.

Demi-permanent colors, which only color your hair for 30 washes or so, are a nice choice for some people -- but they do not work well for people with gray. The color may cover initially, but it rinses out of gray hair faster than colored hairs, which leaves you looking gray before you're due for another dye job. Semi-permanent color, which lasts much longer (virtually forever), is a better choice for gray hairs.

2. Stick with neutral tones.

There are shades of hair dye with an ashy color, and others labeled "bright." What you want, however, is something neutral. Ashiness will enhance any hints of grayness that remain, and brightness will make the rest of your hair stand out so much that the gray may be more apparent. Neutral tones will ensure the gray hairs blend right in along with the others.

3. Use a cream formula.

Stay away from liquid hair dyes. They tend to be cheaper than other options, but they do not stick to your hair strands as well, so you risk leaving a few hairs uncovered. Cream or gel colors adhere more effectively to all of your hair, so you get more even coverage.

4. Leave it in longer.

Gray hairs take longer to absorb dye than colored hairs. As such, you will want to leave the color on your hair for a little longer than the box recommends. If the box recommends 15 minutes, leave it on for 25. If the box recommends 25, leave it on for 35. Unless you are bleaching your hair, the few extra minutes will not damage your hair; they should just enhance the color on your grays.

5. Consider visiting a professional.

Although dying your hair at home is the less expensive approach, you may be better off having it dyed in a salon once you start going gray. Your stylist will be able to look at your hair and recommend a shade and a formula that will hide your grays and also give you a look you enjoy. Improving The Smell Of My Hair

I have always been a naturally sweaty person, which kind of got in the way when I really started dating. I realized I was going to be left trying to smell my best around the people around me, which really made me nervous. However, a friend of mine told me about a great kind of shampoo that was meant to help people who were struggling with bad odors. The shampoo really improved the smell of my hair, and when I used it every day, it eliminated the issue altogether. This blog is all about improving your hair and skin care by changing up your products.
